Still a New Problem for Defeasibility: A Rejoinder to Borges
I objected that the defeasibility theory of knowledge prohibits you from knowing that you know that p if your knowledge that p is a posteriori. Rodrigo Borges claims that Peter Klein has already satisfactorily answered a version of my objection. He attempts to defend Klein’s reply and argues that my objection fails because a principle on which it is based is false.I will show that my objection is not a version of the old one that Klein attempts (unsuccessfully) to address, that Borges’ defence of Klein’s reply fails and that his argument against my new objection leaves it untouched
Galois covers of type (p,...,p), vanishing cycles formula, and the existence of torsor structures
In this article we prove a local Riemman-Hurwitz formula which compares the
dimensions of the spaces of vanishing cycles in a finite Galois cover of type
(p,p,...,p) between formal germs of p-adic curves and which generalises the
formula proven by the first author in the case of Galois covers of degree p. We
also investigate the problem of the existence of a torsor structure for a
finite Galois cover of type (p,p,...,p) between p-adic schemes.Comment: Final version, to appear in Osaka Journal of Mathematic
Talk it up! — Integrating and prioritizing conversational data in documentation
Syllabus for workshop, CoLang 2016This course will introduce participants to some of the basic methodological and theoretical issues related to recording and analyzing everyday conversations. We will discuss specific contributions of naturalistic interactions to understanding aspects of linguistic structure, social interaction, and culture and explore how interactional data can be better integrated into language documentation projects.2015 NSF/BCS 1500841: CoLang 2016: Institute on Collaborative Language Research – ALASKA

Issues of quality assurance in the management of plagiarism in blended learning environments
Increasing access to and availability of electronic resources presents students with a rich
library of opportunities for independent study. But students also find themselves in the
confusing territory of how they should best use these resources within their assessment
activities. Likewise, teaching institutions are faced with the problems of plagiarism and
collusion, and the challenges of educating, deterring, detecting, and dealing with breaches of
policy in a fair and consistent way across all disciplines.
This paper examines issues of quality assurance in the management of plagiarism by
discussing the following questions:
– How can effective automated plagiarism detection services be introduced and managed
across the institution?
– What teaching and assessment practices can be adopted to deter plagiarism?
– What part should collusion and plagiarism detection tools play in educating and deterring
students?
– What are appropriate penalties for plagiarism and collusion and how can these be
applied consistently across disciplines?
Drawing together three distinct strands of research, in both distance and campus based
institutions, the authors discuss how practice and policy have evolved in recent years in an
attempt to reduce the incidence of plagiarism and collusion. The paper will illustrate this
evolution by reporting on recent developments in assessment strategy, detection tools, and
policy within two UK HE Institutions: The UK Open University and Manchester Metropolitan
University
Catalyzing Collaboration: The Developing Infrastructure for Federal Public Private Partnerships
There is growing interest on the part of government, philanthropy and business to work together to achieve greater impact. Partnerships that span the sectors have the potential to achieve more than any sector can achieve on its own by leveraging the strengths of each. However, such partnerships also give rise to added costs and entail greater risks. To address these challenges, offices of strategic partnerships are emerging at the federal level to provide an infrastructure to catalyze cross-sectoral partnerships. This report examines 21 such offices in federal departments and agencies whose purpose is to facilitate and accelerate partnerships with philanthropy and business -- ranging from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Education, to the Department of State and the Agency for International Development, to the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The formation of these offices has been driven by champions within government -- many with prior experience in philanthropy or business -- that have witnessed the power of working collaboratively with other sectors. Their actions have often been reinforced by executive orders and other directives conducive to their growth. In the case of those offices that have been created in the last few years, they have also been encouraged by the examples of their more established counterparts
